Botox Treatment vs. Surgical Facelift

If you’re considering having a cosmetic procedure done on your face for the first time, you’re probably thinking about two types of treatments commonly chosen by those who’ve had a procedure done: Botox treatment and surgical facelift. Apart from their obvious difference, which is one being a non-surgical procedure and the other requiring surgery, what other differences are there between the two?

Below is a brief breakdown of their differences.

Surgical Facelift

This cosmetic procedure generally targets loose and sagging facial skin, particularly on the neck and jowl areas. Deep creases on the forehead, eyebrows and under the eyes can also be corrected by a surgical facelift. To achieve the intended results, the surgeon may have to reposition or remove excess (loose and sagging) skin to give the face a “lift.”

Since this is an invasive surgical procedure, you will have to take into account the following factors:

  • Cost—it is more expensive than Botox injections
  • Recovery period—one to two weeks before you can return to work; three weeks before you can return to your normal physical activities
  • Numbness on the face may be experienced for up to nine months after the procedure
  • Side effects may include adverse reactions to anesthesia, scarring, and blood clot (hematoma)

Botox Treatment

First off, this is a non-invasive cosmetic procedure, so there is no downtime. You can immediately go back to work after receiving the treatment. This procedure generally targets mild upper facial skin conditions like:

  • Frown lines
  • Crow’s feet
  • Forehead lines

Unlike with a surgical facelift where facial skin is manipulated, Botox injections target facial muscles, temporarily paralyzing these to prevent further development of wrinkles and lines with every facial movement. For some patients, they choose to receive this treatment as a complement to their surgical facelift.

As with any type of cosmetic procedure, your choice of doctor can spell a huge difference between a successful treatment and one that could make you look like “you had something done.” It is always best to consult a highly trained licensed doctor to make sure that no serious adverse effects will be experienced after the procedure.
