Restylane
Rejuvé has been honored as a Top 100 volume injector for Restylane®! We’re grateful that we’ve been able to use our experience and expertise with Restylane to help so many of our patients. We are excited to continue providing you with one of the top Restylane experiences available not just in the Bay Area CA, but with this honor, in the entire country.
Restylane® is a safe and natural cosmetic dermal filler that restores volume and fullness to the skin to correct facial wrinkles and folds, such as nasolabial folds.
Restylane® has a highly favorable safety profile. It is composed of non-animal stabilized hyaluronic acid. Hyaluronic acid is a substance found naturally in the human body. Restylane® is fully biocompatible. There is limited risk of animal-based disease transmission or development of allergic reactions to animal proteins. No allergy testing is required before use.
Restylane® maintains its shape using the body’s own moisture. The hyaluronic acid in Restylane is hydrophilic or “water loving.” As hyaluronic acid gradually degrades, each molecule binds to more water and over time, the same volume can be maintained with less hyaluronic acid. This ability of hyaluronic acid to bind to water is what helps provide long-lasting results.
Unlike rooster-derived hyaluronic acids and bovine collagen products, Restylane® is free from animal proteins. This limits any risk of animal-based disease transmissions or development of allergic reactions to animal proteins.
FAQs About Restylane:
What is Restylane®?
A: Restylane® is a safe and natural cosmetic dermal filler that restores volume and fullness to the skin to correct moderate to severe facial wrinkles and folds, such as nasolabial folds and to augment the lips for lip enhancement.
Q: What is Restylane® made of?
A: Restylane® is a cosmetic dermal filler composed of non-animal stabilized hyaluronic acid. Hyaluronic acid is a natural substance that already exists in the human body and is used to provide volume and fullness to the skin. The hyaluronic acid in Restylane® is a crystal-clear gel called NASHA™. NASHA is biodegradable and completely biocompatible with human hyaluronic acid.
Q: Is Restylane® an FDA approved product?
A: Restylane® is FDA approved to correct moderate to severe nasolabial folds and to help augment the lips for lip enhancement and for lines around the mouth. There are other areas like underneath the eyes for the marionette lines, hollows, temples, nose in which Restylane® is injected but these uses and areas are considered off-label at this time. The company, Galderma, which makes Restylane®, is currently awaiting more FDA approved indications.
Q: How do I choose between Restylane® vs JUVEDERM™?
A: This all depends on the patient, the area being treated, personal preference, and the insight that Dr. Tang can provide about what will best help you achieve the results you desire.
Restylane® and JUVEDERM™ both contain hyaluronic acid and are used to soften lines and wrinkles and are used to restore volume. Even though, Restylane® and JUVEDERM™ have many similar properties, they are very different. I have some patients who love one or the other. Some say there is a better “look” to one product over the other which is something that person will know only after they have tried both.
Now, JUVEDERM™ is definitely smoother. Once JUVEDERM™ is injected into the skin, you don’t feel it. So for the lips and the nasolabial folds, these are great areas to do JUVEDERM™. If you are a person who doesn’t want to “feel” the product, JUVEDERM™ probably will be the better choice. However, we do also now offer Restylane Kysse, which is designed specifically for the lips and area around the mouth. Restylane Kysse is formulated to be smoother than Restylane.
Some patients like the feel of the product because they feel better knowing that they have the product and it is doing something in that desired area. For underneath the eyes and for patients who have dark circles, I prefer to use Restylane® because as the injector I feel I have more control of where the product goes. Also, I feel the granular consistency in Restylane® gives a better correction. Also, JUVEDERM™has been shown to cause a darkish hue underneath the eyes especially in patients with fair thin skin (called the Tyndall effect) so therefore I do not use JUVEDERM™in this area.
Longevity is also an issue. Restylane® around the nasolabial areas last 4-6 months. For JUVEDERM™, it could be the same or it can last longer. JUVEDERM™ uses hylacross technology which provides more cross linking between the different hyaluronic acid molecules whereby it requires more time for the body to degrade it. Some of my patients feel it can last 9-12 months. This is certainly a determining factor for a lot of patients. However, in some patients who get Restylane they have found it lasts up to a year as well. All in all, it depends on the patient and sometimes until you try both then we won’t know which will last longer.
Cost could be an issue. JUVEDERM™ is slightly more expensive. When needing multiple syringes it becomes more pertinent.
Q: Is Restylane® safe?
A: Yes. Restylane® has been used by dermatologists and plastic surgeons since 1996 worldwide. Restylane® has a highly favorable safety profile. It’s composed of non-animal stabilized hyaluronic acid, a substance found naturally in the human body. Restylane® is fully biocompatible. There is limited risk of animal-based disease transmission or development of allergic reactions to animal proteins. No allergy testing is required before use. The most commonly reported side effects are temporary injection-site redness, swelling, pain/tenderness, firmness, lumps/bumps, and bruising. These effects typically resolve in less than seven days.
Q: Are there any precautions to consider before using Restylane®?
A: Yes. You should keep in mind the following guidelines, though Dr. Tang will help to determine whether you are a good candidate for Restylane.
- The safety of Restylane® for use during pregnancy, in breastfeeding females or in patients under 18 years has not been established.
- The safety of Restylane® in patients with increased susceptibility to keloid formation and hypertrophic scarring has not been studied. Restylane® should not be used in patients with known susceptibility to keloid formation or hypertrophic scarring.
- You will need to minimize exposure of the treated area to excessive sun and UV lamp exposure, as well as extreme cold weather, until any initial swelling and redness has resolved.
- If you are considering doing a laser treatment, chemical peel, or any other procedure based on active dermal response after you have been treated with Restylane®, there is a possible risk of eliciting an inflammatory reaction at the implant site. This also applies if Restylane® is administered before the skin has healed completely after such a procedure.
Q: How often should I have Restylane® treatments done?
A: Treatments are typically scheduled at 6 months to 12 months intervals depending on the treated area. Dr. Tang will discuss the appropriate follow-up treatments during your visit.
Q: Will I have any scars from the injections?
A: No.
Q: Will I be able to go back to work after the Restylane® injections?
A: Most of the time patients are able to go back to work the same day or the next day. All patients will have some redness and swelling immediately following the procedure which usually lasts 1-3 days. The redness and swelling are easily covered with makeup. Some patients will have some bruising which may last several days to 1 week. Some areas tend to bruise more easily, for example, the skin around the eyes. However, there is no definite way of predicting who will bruise beforehand. There are several ways to help lessen bruising including icing, arnica, and avoiding medications such as aspirin, anti-inflammatories, Vitamin E, and omega 3’s prior to the procedure. For more details, Dr. Tang will discuss all available methods to minimize any potential bruising prior to the procedure.
Q: Do the injections hurt?
A: Restylane® is injected directly into the skin in tiny amounts by an ultrafine needle, resulting in minimal discomfort. The procedure is simple and convenient, and the results are practically instantaneous. To optimize your comfort during the short procedure, we anesthetize the area prior with a topical anesthetic and can provide dental blocks (similar to what dentists use) if necessary. Medications prior to the treatment are not necessary.
Q: Can Restylane® be combined with lasers?
A: Yes. Restylane® can be combined with different types of lasers including laser resurfacing, IPL photofacials, and tightening lasers. Dr. Tang or his staff will discuss which types of treatments will provide the most optimal results.
Q: How much do Restylane® treatments cost?
A: Restylane® is a customized procedure based on your specific needs, so the cost will vary from patient to patient. In general, the cost of Restylane®will depend on the number of syringes used. Dr. Tang or his staff will be able to give you an estimate prior to the procedure at no extra charge. In addition, Medicis, the makers of Restylane®, provide a Rewards program that gives cash back and an eventual bonus syringe with each treatment.
Q: How is Restylane different from Botox®?
A: Restylane® is a natural, cosmetic dermal filler. In contrast, Botox® is a compound that blocks nerve transmission which relaxes the underlying muscles. They are used for different indications and because of this, they can be combined to enhance each other’s effects.
Q: What is the difference between Restylane® and Restylane Lyft®?
A: Restylane® and Restylane Lyft® are both composed of hyaluronic acid. Restylane Lyft® has larger gel particles and is intended to correct deeper lines and folds.
Q: Can you combine Restylane® and Restylane Lyft®?
A: It depends. For deeper lines and folds, the combination is an excellent way to correct the lines and folds with a smoother finish. For milder folds and lines, only Restylane® should be used.
Q: How is Restylane® different from bovine collagen?
A: Bovine collagen is derived from animals (cows) and requires an allergy test. Restylane® can be administered without pretesting, so no waiting is required. With Restylane® there is limited risk of animal-based disease transmission or allergic reaction.
Q: Why Should I Pick Rejuve To Do My Injection?
A: After deciding that Restylane might be the right option for you, the most important thing is to pick who will perform your treatment. We understand that there are many facilities and options out there and we want to encourage you to do your research and perhaps meet the potential injector(s). Ultimately, it will be the injector who will determine the final result and not the product because the product is a great product that has been out since 2003. He/She will have to understand your needs and goals and use their artistic eye and experience to help guide you to the right goals/choices and deliver the results that you are looking for. In the end, you are buying the injector and not necessarily the product.
At Rejuve, we want to assure you that we have the experience and knowledge to provide you with the best results. In fact, we have been recognized as a top 25 center (out of 6000+ clinics) in the nation for the amount of Restylane we use on an annual basis. This ranking can be only achieved if patients are satisfied with their results and keep on coming back. Dr. Tang and Alexandra Tang RN welcome you to come in for a complimentary consultation to meet with us and see the difference.
Q: Can Restylane® be used anywhere on the face?
A: Restylane® has been used in more than 3 million treatments in over 70 countries to correct a variety of wrinkles. It is currently FDA approved in the U.S. for the treatment of moderate to severe facial wrinkles and folds, such as nasolabial folds and for lip augmentation and for the lines around the mouth. Other popular areas such as underneath the eyes to improve hollowness under the eyes or in the cheeks for cheek enhancement or on the bridge of the nose to even the nose is considered off label.
Q: How long does Restylane® last?
A: Restylane® is proven to deliver long-lasting results. Studies have shown that Restylane® effects generally last for about six months or longer. The unique NASHA™ technology helps maintain the cosmetic effect until the injected material is nearly gone.
Q: What should patients do prior to treatment?
A: Restylane® requires no pretesting, but you should take a few precautions before being treated. Avoid using aspirin, non-steroidal anti-inflammatory medication, St. John’s Wort, omega 3’s, or high doses of Vitamin E supplements prior to treatment, because these may increase bruising or bleeding at the injection site. Also, if you have previously suffered from facial cold sores, there is a risk that the needle punctures could contribute to another recurrence. You should notify your injector prior to having your injection so that you can get started on prophylactic antibiotics.
