Botox Preventative Treatment: 3 Key Things to Know

Not so long ago, Botox treatments were regarded as a corrective cosmetic procedure exclusively for the older generation or people with visible signs of aging, specifically, wrinkles and fine lines. And in general, these are patients aged between 40 and 70 years old. These days, however, it’s not uncommon to hear of younger individuals (in their late 20’s or 30’s) receiving Botox injections even without visible wrinkles, frown lines, or fine lines.

Preventative Botox has become the latest trend in non-invasive facial cosmetic treatments. Here are a few answers to some common questions about the treatment:

1. What is preventative Botox?

In a nutshell, it’s the same Botox injection given to patients who wish to temporarily prevent wrinkles and lines from appearing, or to reduce the visibility of existing lines. The only difference is that with preventative Botox, there aren’t any visible wrinkles, frown lines, or crow’s feet being targeted; instead, areas, where dynamic wrinkles may appear, are injected with the medication to preempt the appearance of such when the time comes or at least reduce their “severity.”

2. Who should get the treatment?

Preventative Botox is usually for people in their 20s and 30s; however, it’s important to seek the advice of a professional doctor or dermatologist about your eligibility for the treatment because each patient’s case is unique. A good indicator would be around the time you start to see the faint outline of fine lines as these are the beginning stages of wrinkles.

3. You will need less Botox when you’re older

Botox results are temporary, lasting between three and four months (up to six months in some patients especially when you are younger and have finer wrinkles). Dynamic wrinkles will become more visible as you get older but the good news is, since you’ve been receiving preventative treatments, you will likely need fewer of these injections or a lower dose when you’re older and the signs of aging become more pronounced.

As mentioned above, it’s best to seek the advice of a professional and licensed doctor to determine if you are a good candidate for preventative Botox. It is likewise recommended that you seek the assistance of a licensed and board-certified doctor with years of experience in administering Botox injections as dilution and injection require accuracy and precision not only for best results but more importantly, for the patient’s safety.
