Anyone who has never undergone any type of cosmetic before might feel nervous about their first treatment, which is completely normal. If you’re undergoing a Botox treatment for the first time, you might even feel a tinge of apprehension as you imagine the needle is inserted through your skin to inject the substance.
Questions like “Will it hurt?” or “Will it change my facial features?” might run through your mind. To ease your mind, here are some of the most common experiences of patients from their first Botox treatment:
1. Yes, it’s going to sting…a little
You will feel a slight sting as the needle is being injected through your skin but only for a split-second. Before you can even focus on the pain, it will have already gone away. On your succeeding treatments, you’ll hardly even notice the needle. If the sting is too much, there is a strong topical numbing cream that can be applied beforehand which can remove the sting so no need to worry.
2. You’ll be in and out of the clinic in no time
What every patient should know about Botox is that it’s a fairly simple, straightforward treatment; no long preps necessary, no downtime or recovery needed, and the usual maximum time for a first Botox treatment is 30 minutes. Succeeding treatments usually only last about 15 to 20 minutes. What this means is that you’ll be in and out of the clinic in no time.
3. You’ll leave the clinic looking red and blotchy
Needles were injected on your face so expect to look a little red and blotchy immediately after your Botox session. But these will clear up shortly afterward.
Knowing this now before your first Botox treatment, you shouldn’t schedule meetings or appointments after treatment if you know you’ll feel self-conscious about the redness and blotchy patches.
4. There could be a little bruising
The day after your treatment, you might notice a little bruising on the treated areas, which is not common in general but can be reduced by avoiding any blood thinners like Aspirin or NSAIDS like Motrin, Aleve, Excedrin, fish oil, or Vitamin E. Bruising is quite uncommon but if there is a bruise, most of the time it is minimal, so you can easily conceal it with make-up.
Patients can wear make-up immediately after treatment but are reminded to be careful about the application; making sure not to apply pressure on the face to prevent the medication from spreading to other areas.
5. You might feel a slight headache
This is quite unusual but it usually resolves that day.
In more rare circumstances, it may last up to 1 week. Patients can apply ice to the treatment areas or take Tylenol as it resolves spontaneously. .
