Among all the choices for non-invasive cosmetic treatments for facial lines and wrinkles, Botox remains one of the most popular. In < a= rel"nofollow"href="https://www.isaps.org/wp-content/uploads/2019/12/ISAPS-Global-Survey-Results-2018-new.pdf">2018, an estimated 6,097,516 Botox procedures were performed worldwide on both women (5,334,764) and men (752,752). The dominant age group that received treatment was between 35 and 50 years old at 2,839,004.
Its popularity has everything to do with its effectiveness as well as its quick and practically painless application (some patients have reported feeling mild discomfort as the needle is being injected into the skin).
To give readers a little refresher, here are the common target areas for Botox injections:
Eye area
For a lot of people, lines and wrinkles around the eyes are the first to appear, becoming visible every time they squint their eyes, grin, or smile. Wrinkles around the eyes are called lateral orbital lines but they’re more popularly known as crow’s feet. When Botox is injected into this area, the muscles it targets are the orbicularis oculi.
Forehead area
For some, forehead lines appear before crow’s feet, hence, they usually want to target the forehead first. Your doctor may also refer to these forehead lines as pleats, and with Botox treatment, each of these pleats is injected with the medication. The muscle it targets is the frontalis muscle.
Mouth area
For the mouth area, lines on the sides of the lines surrounding it are usually called smoker’s lines. Smoker’s lines or peri-oral lines are each injected with Botox medication. For this area, the muscle targeted is the orbicularis oris muscle.
Between the eyebrows
If you’re tired of looking tired or angry all the time because of those lines between your brows, a quick Botox treatment can temporarily soften their appearance. These creases between your brows are called glabellar lines, “11,” or “elevens,” and the muscles the medication targets are the corrugators supercilii and the procerus muscles.
There are times when the corners of the mouth start to turn downwards and this starts to make you look sad. This is called the oral commissure. For this area, the muscle that gets targeted is the DAO or the depressor anguli oris muscle.
Other target areas for Botox treatments also include marionette lines and chin dents or mentalis dysfunction.
If you’re considering Botox for the first time, it’s important to consult an experienced and licensed doctor as they are not only trained to deliver accurate and precise treatments, but they also have a better understanding of facial anatomy.
